課程概述

This is a 3-unit course in population ecology. Population genetics is offered as a different course. Since some students taking this course have minimal ecology background, the material covered in this course will be mostly basic topics. Each week, I will incorporate lectures with various activities, including indoor/outdoor experiments, computer simulation, and classroom discussions to achieve the following goals for this course. Much of what you will learn is your own work, including weekly reading and assignments. I welcome your suggestions anytime.

課程目標
1.Students understand science as a process of inquiry. This means they are
able to ask scientific questions, gather data and observations, process their
results, and synthesize coherent, justifiable trends or conclusions that can
be applied to other systems.
2.Students are able to locate scientific information and analyze its
usefulness and validity.
3.Students are able to use mathematical principles and computer technology to
solve scientific problems.
4.Students have a broad knowledge of the biological systems, and the
principles which govern them.
5.Students recognize that science is based upon a small number of important
principles which allow scientists to understand a diverse range of natural
phenomena.
課程要求
1.Attendance: You need to attend lectures to earn points from quizzes. Only absences with supporting official documents are excused. For example, if you need to do field work in a given week, please provide a note detailing the reason and have it signed by your advisor.
2.Group collaboration: You will be divided into random groups. Each will ideally be led by a graduate student. You will sit together during the class and generate products for exercises together.
3.Quizzes: There will be weekly quizzes. Quizzes will be based on material covered in lectures and reading assignment. They will include mainly short answer questions. Sometimes, an in-class assignment will replace part of a quiz. There is no final exam per se.
4.Homework: There will be weekly homework assignments. Homework are usually short reports of laboratory exercises. Frequently, you will turn in homework as groups. In that case, all group members will share the same score for the homework. No make-up quizzes will be allowed; no late homework will be accepted. Quiz & homework total 20 points per week.
5.Group Investigation: Students will work in groups to complete two group projects. You need to apply the scientific methods to answer a question of interest to you, report the process in a written report, and give an oral presentation to your class. At the end of semester, you will turn in, as a group, a portfolio that contains everything you have done related to the group project. No late reports will be accepted. All group members will share the same score for the written and oral report.
6.Peer-grading: You will grade yourself and your group member at the end of semester.
7.Discipline: There is absolutely no food during the class. We encourage active academic interactions during class discussion. However, we trust you know when it’s time to shut up. Tardiness, leaving early, or having cell phone ringing are annoying behaviors. Serious tardiness will be treated as absences. If you need to leave early, please inform me in advance.
8.Honesty: Cheating will not be tolerated. It includes plagiarism. Do not copy materials from sources that are not your own. We observe the highest standard of academic integrity.
